COUNCIL GM CONFIRMS 'NO GUARANTEED EXCLUSIVE USE' FOR OFFSHORE RESIDENT PERMIT-HOLDERS IN ANY NEW CAR PARK FACILITY.
Despite repeated assurances to the contrary from our offshore association representatives, at the Council forum last night, Council's GM confirmed that exclusive parking for offshore residents WILL NOT be guaranteed in any new car park facility. Although it is up to Councillors to determine in their final decision, the GM said there could be no guarantee it would be granted, because it would set a significant precedent.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR US?
In any of the proposed car park options ($5.4/$7.4 million), which we will be paying the lion's share for through purchase of our permits, we are likely to be sharing the benefits of any extra parking with pay and display users. The reality is that during peak summer months with Pasadena/Waterfront Cafe/Allsail/local residents/visitors etc, a conservative estimate of 300+ extra people will be looking for parking at Church Point.
Unless/until offshore user rights are clarified, we could be facing the same problems-EVEN AFTER ANY NEW CAR PARK IS BUILT. The only likely exception would be in the deck option where 60 private lease holders will have their parking assured. For anyone else without $4500 to guarantee a parking space, they are likely to be driving around looking for a park, competing with everyone else.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Demand that our elected representatives lobby on behalf of offshore residents for exclusive use for permit-holders at any new car park facility (particularly overnight). More importantly, we should be writing/emailing Councillors before they make their final decision on 2 Dec. The deadline for comments has been extended until 18 Nov.
